Instructions for Quilt/Design Project:


Design or Quilt Project  (Due January 29, 2016)


You will be making a scale model of a design or quilt you create.  The design will be made using patterned craft paper and a solid color border.   You will find the area and perimeter of the overall design and the border, and the area of each of the figures in your design.  There are many details to this project so you will have to keep everything labeled and organized. You must use formulas with the solutions shown. All paper used on this project will be provided by the teacher!
A.  Design
   1. Make a design using 2 geometric shapes that tessellate or create a pattern. Be sure
       the design fits into a rectangular shape measuring 6 in x 8 in.
   2. Determine the dimensions of each individual shape.
   3. Find the area of each shape.
   4. Find the sum of the areas of all of the shapes.
   5. Find the area of the rectangle 6in. x 8 in.


B. Border
   1. Create a border for the design 1½ inches in width.
   2. Find the area and perimeter (inside and outside measurement) of the border.  Show
       how you found the answers using formulas.


C.    Computation Page  (Please type this page)
  1. Find the area of the rectangle:  Show the formula and how to use it to
      find the area.  Label your answer.
  2. Find the area of each different shape used in your design.  Show the
      formulas and how you used them to calculate the areas.  Label your
      answers.
  3. Find the sum of the areas of the figures.
  4. Show that the sum of the areas of the shapes equals the area of the
      whole design (rectangle).
  5. Find the perimeter of the outside and inside of the border.
  6. Show how you would find the area of the border.
Final Project:
You will be handing in the quilt/floor design with all the information mounted on 1 piece of 12x18 paper.  You are being graded on the following (100 pts):
·    Complete design with border (35 pts )
·    Computation Page showing how area and perimeter were found for each component
     using formulas (40 pts)
·    Neatness and organization (15 pts)
·    Aesthetics (10 pts)


Due Dates:


1/19/16   Design completed (cut, glued, measured) with formula work showing area and        
              perimeter.
  Begin work on border and type “Computation Page”.
1/29/16   Completed project due.
